Sea throwing back garbage on the Mumbai Shores

What more could we do when nature says it’s enough? The prime example of this is the recent littering of the ocean back to the land. Large dumps of plastic garbage patch in the oceans have put mankind to shame. This is the sort of environment we never wanted to picture, yet there is no stopping it. Over 2,15,000 KG of garbage was thrown back by the Arabian Sea on Mumbai Shores this July.

The World Environment Day theme this year was “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The efforts for this have been made but the massive wave of Arabian Sea has brought us to our feet. Watch this video

Issues created

There were tons of issues created due to sea throwing back garbage. And people reacted strongly to these concerns. Eyes were raised as more & more people came to realize the plague surrounding our oceans. This is what we dispose daily into the oceans and is now thrown back at us. Now is the time to ban using those single-use plastics and immediately put an end to plastic pollution.

BMC officials stated that while normally it takes around one hour to clean the marine drive stretch, it took two and a half hours to get the task completed. So, you can imagine the extent of trash which covered the Mumbai shores. People were distressed and disappointed more with themselves. This spread a very positive message around people who mistreating water bodies. At least, for now, they have realized what is wrong with our ways of living.

Key highlights of the chaos created by the trash:

  • The garbage that washed ashore could have been originated at some place far away from Mumbai.
  • 9 metric tonnes of garbage was collected along the Marine Drive. An eye-popping figure for all.
  • Drainage systems got clogged due to huge dumps of garbage thrown back by the sea.
  • Sea throwing back garbage proved to us that karma exists. What we dump carelessly has come back to haunt us in an unimaginable manner.

The world’s largest garbage dumpsite is not on land but in the oceans. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the world’s largest dumpsite full of plastic waste. Plastic collected here is depleting, degrading and destroying marine life.

Items like plastic straws for a long time have plagued our environment. These products are now a part of our lifestyle and slowly but surely degrading the environment. Neither they decompose nor do these items get recycled, so naturally, they find their way into the water bodies disturbing our environment.

Careless disposal

As humans, we are responsible for this chaos. Our careless disposal or throwing away plastic trash has led to such a catastrophe. It is a dangerous habit that is now causing harm to our planet. Plastic products must be recycled and not thrown away carelessly as you will see during your regular morning walks.

What should we do?

Stop throwing away plastic

First and foremost thing to do is to stop throwing away plastic products. If we cannot stop using these products then at least make a conscious effort to minimize its use. Recycle more rather than throwing it away. Plastic items are a convenient product to be utilized for everyday use. So we cannot abandon it right away. We must re-think our strategies and enforce different solutions.

Using alternatives

Single-use plastic is harmful to our environment. The use of alternatives such as stainless steel straws is an ideal option to remove plastic straws. Alternatives that are environment-friendly are necessary for the planet. Utilize such greener alternatives and ban the use of single-use plastic.

Spread the word

A majority of the population is still unaware of these incidents. Sea throwing away garbage is an issue of gigantic proportions. It is an indicator that oceans have had enough and they want you to stop using this plastic mess. Spread the word around about this pollution and urge them to stop using these harmful products for your environment.
